What is the Editorial Board?
SMB Books is run by Great Little Book Publishing
Co., Inc. (see
www.greatlittlebook.com). We want SMB Books to truly be
the place to go for books, audio
CDs, white papers, and other materials in the SMB Consulting space.
To do that, we needed to separate the "editorial"
decisions from our own organization. So we created an editorial
board to review products and evaluate their suitability for
inclusion to the SMB Books web site.
While we'd like to publish every 20-page white
paper that's submitted, let's be honest: Some will be very poorly
written; some will be completely un-original; some will repeat
materials already posted on the site. And so forth.
We needed a way to:
- Evaluate a large number of products
- Without overwhelming a small group of
people
- Place editorial control outside our
parent company
- Represent a wide spectrum of the SMB
Consulting community
So we thought an independent Editorial Board would
achieve these goals.
How does the Who is on the
Editorial Board work?
First, an author (or publisher or distributor)
submits a "product" for review. They send us five copies. From our
Board of 30 people, we pick five people who have expressed an
interest in, or knowledge of, that topic. We send the five copies
out to these folks.
Each of the mini-board members reviews the product
and fills out an evaluation form. The produce two results: A rating
of the product, and a written review of the product. The rating is
on a five-point scale from "No" to "Yes" on the question of whether
the product should be offered on SMBBooks.com.
The Editorial Board also provides additional
information to us regarding topic placement of the product,
potential audience, possible package deal grouping, and so forth.
For the author, the Board may "reject" a
submission but make recommendations about how it could be improved
and re-submitted (Note to authors: There is no cost for submitting
or re-submitting products.).
How much does it pay?
Zero. Please be kind and respectful of our Board.
They have all agreed to contribute their time, effort, and knowledge
for FREE. Of course they get to read a bunch of books, but this is
not an easy job!

Can I apply to be on the Editorial
Board?
Currently, the Board is closed. We have all the
volunteers we need. But, we anticipate needing addition board
members in the future.
People may drop out, change jobs, etc. And, if
we're lucky, we'll be so overwhelmed that our current board won't be
able to handle the work! We may also decide to rotate the board
member on a 1-, 2-, or 3-year basis.
Which means: Your application is welcome. To apply
to serve on the Editorial Board "some day," please fill out the
Contact Form and request an
application. Be patient, though. First, we're extremely busy with
the launch right now, and Second, there aren't any openings right
now.
